Mich. Officials Say Stimulus Saves Education Jobs
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Jobs in public schools continue to be the ones saved most often by the federal stimulus package in Michigan.
The state estimates Friday that 16,900 jobs were supported by the Recovery Act in the three-month period that ended Dec. 31. Slightly more than half were in education.
The preliminary count covers only jobs reported by state agencies, including school employment supported by stimulus money funneled through the state.
The report does not distinguish between jobs that were saved and jobs that were created. But in education, the Recovery Act likely is helping save jobs that otherwise would have been lost rather than create new ones.
The White House changed its methods of counting jobs credited to the stimulus in December after flaws were reported in counts earlier last year.
