Schauer: Snyder Should Repudiate Patterson’s Offensive Comments, Call on Agema to Resign

January 21, 2014

LANSING – Today Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer called on Gov. Rick Snyder to stand up to members of his own party by repudiating Brooks Patterson’s offensive comments about Detroit and Native Americans, and calling on RNC Committeeman Dave Agema to resign.

“There should be no place for discrimination in the great state of Michigan,” said Schauer. “The recent comments by Brooks Patterson and Dave Agema aren’t just offensive, they’re damaging to our state. Their remarks don’t represent our Michigan values. As Governor, Rick Snyder should call on Patterson to apologize for his comments, and demand Agema resign as RNC Committeeman. Michigan is a place where everyone should have equal opportunities to succeed. We need a Governor who will stand up for what’s right, even when it means standing up to members of his own party.”

Yesterday, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Gov. Snyder again refused to call on RNC Committeeman Dave Agema to resign.

Snyder also declined to comment on Oakland County Executive Brooks Patterson’s remarks in the New Yorker, where he said, “What we’re going to do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and corn.”
